ASID’s Showcase Villa

Merging the Skills of 25 Designers

Houston Lifestyles & Homes, May 2001
story by Sam A. Houston

The fast-growing popularity of Mediterranean style was celebrated recently at ASID’s 2001 Showcase on Cheshire Bend near Sweetwater Country Club in First Colony. Members of the American Society of Interior Designers, Texas Gulf Coast chapter, unleashed their talents throughout the capacious, Mediterranean villa constructed by Peterson Homebuilders.
Approximately 6,500 square feet were treated to creative compositions by 25 designers, each of whom was responsible for a room, rooms or area. Peterson cooperated in following specifications requested by designers to give each room its own individual character while conforming to an overall ambience and budget.

A two-week open house benefitted the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County, which seeks to educate the functionally illiterate in reading and writing skills and to teach English as a second language. Over the last 13 years volunteers have given nearly 200,000 hours of time tutoring approximately 8,000 adult learners.

“Approximately 3,000 toured the house over 14 days, gaining some $15,000 for the Literacy Council’s programs.”

The Peterson brothers, Chuck and D.C., have worked with the chapter previously to develop ASID showcases in The Woodlands and in Bellaire.

villa_mergeBuilding design by Sullivan Stevens & Henry Associates of Houston offered a plan that is open and generous, filled with surprise elements and spaces, such as a private garage adjoining a seperate guest suite. Another unexpected plum is a roomy, sunlit exercise room above the master suite, accessible only from stairs in the master bath.

Off of the game/media room the sophisticated work of Kelly Gale Amen, ASID, includes chairs, tables and ottoman of his own design and production. The balcony overlooks the pool.

Just off the game/media room a delightful covered balcony is accessible for a breath of nature’s breezes or those generated by a pair of overhead fans. Placed with the sure expertise of Kelly Gale Amen, ASID, of KGA Compound, the few, but essential pieces of Amen art produce the right accent without hindering the view.

Amen designed and John Palmer built the metal chairs, table and plant stand, all in a clean, uncluttered design and part of his extensive catalog of usable art. A giant, brightly colored ottoman livens the space, accessible from doors on either corner.
